The collection was designed to be cohesive in texture and tone but to straddle many different styles with a slightly vintage feel. They began by collecting references; gathering fabrics and wallpapers from the 1950s to give them the overall feel. The wealth of material they found meant that what was originally going to be a capsule collection blossomed into a plethora of vibrant energetic designs.
Colour was always going to be an essential here, and they set themselves the task of using three or more colours in every pattern. This chromatic range gives the collection as a whole a richly diverse and versatile palette. The range of colours retains that 50s feel with a slightly sludgy natural tonality.
These designs needed clarity in their execution to show off the colour and pattern to its best effect, and they settled on flat weaves hand knotted in New Zealand wool; hence the collection being named Aukland. This fine flat weave quality allows a clean line and adds definition to the designs making them feel almost like a textured print. The wool flat weave quality has a similar impact to a hand-knotted rug but without the price point. Jo has nicknamed them ‘Affordable statement rugs’.
The result is a fun and colour-filled range that would suit almost any room; ageless and very very appealing.
